E coli pickles in Japan kill six people
HEALTH officials say six people have died and at least 100 others have been sickened by pickles contaminated with E coli bacteria in northern Japan.
The officials in Hokkaido said on Saturday that the pickled Chinese cabbage was made by two local producers and sold across the prefecture.
The first reports of illness occurred about 10 days ago.
Most victims were elderly people in nursing homes, but a 4-year-old girl in Sapporo city died last week a few days after eating the pickles.
Pickled Chinese cabbage is a popular Japanese side dish, and the deaths have shocked the country.
Most food poisoning cases in the past have involved meat or seafood.
Officials are still investigating, but suspect insufficient sterilisation may have been the cause.

God is the only reason, His grace and mercy has been upon me and I always try my best to give all glory to Him because He has been so good to me. From the reactions so far it?s been great.
You were very close to the late Dagrin. The first time I saw you guys together was when you both collaborated on a song, I can?t remember the title. What was your relationship like before he passed on?
The song title was ?Imile?. We were close friends and we were like brothers because our friendship was so real.
When you heard of his death, what really came to your mind at that particular time?
I didn?t believe it at first but what can we do; we can?t question God.
Tell us more, who is YQ? Is he married or still searching?
I am a ?diamond in the rough?. I am in a relationship and it?s very private.
What are you working on presently? A single or an album and when should we be expecting it?
I am working on my second album and some videos to back the songs up. I?m going to be doing a lot of experiments and still will give people good songs.
As an artist, who would you call your role model both in Nigeria and abroad and why?
Honestly, in Nigeria it?s Tuface Idibia because of his humble nature and consistency, and abroad, R-Kelly, Akon, Bob Nesta Marley etc.
Tell us how is life in the music industry and how would you rate the Nigerian music industry as an insider?
It?s been kind of hard recently but I?m a believer so that keeps me going. Our music is heard worldwide today and now we rule Africa.
Are you working on any song with any known international stars or you are still waiting for the right time?
I have a lot of things coming up soon and I always keep in touch with some Jamaican acts. Soon you will see something different.
The country is in the state of confusion now. If you are given the opportunity to meet one on one with Mr President, what would you tell him sincerely?
I will tell him to have the fear of GOD and allow GOD to lead him instead of the secret leaders.
The problem we have with artists these days is that they want fame by all means without good inspirational songs. If you are given the opportunity to advise these young highly inspired men and women, what would you say to them?
They should think of setting a trend instead of following or trying to copy. Originality is equal to longevity.
What is your biggest regret and the happiest thing you have done in life?

Zuckerberg admits Facebook stock plunge 'painful' to watch
London, Aug 18 (ANI): Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly admitted that the firm's stock market tumble has been "painful" to watch, while addressing a meeting to boost the morale of his staff.
He gathered the social networking site's staff to discuss the issue ahead of the release of an extra 271 million shares this week, which cut Facebook shares to just 19.87 dollars, almost half their 38 dollar flotation price.
According to The Telegraph, witnesses said that at the meeting, the 28-year-old chief executive was asked if Facebook employees were allowed to talk about the firm's troubles on Wall Street.
Zuckerberg reportedly replied saying that people should now feel comfortable talking about the issue, but still try not to focus on it.
However, he was forced to acknowledge Facebook's "painful" stock market hammering to employees whose options were issued at a higher price than the shares are currently trading at. Many remain unable to trade their share as a series of lock-in periods still remain in force, the paper said.
After Facebook shares sank to a new record low, Zuckerberg's personal fortune has also been slashed to about 10 billion dollars, down from estimates of almost 20 billion dollars in May, the paper added. (ANI)

Green Blog: Electronics Recycling Fire Unnerves a N.Y. Town
After a fire burned through a recycling plant for electrical equipment two weeks ago in Columbia County in New York State, the environmental tests that followed alone were cause for anxiety among residents.
State and federal officials tested for PCBs as well as lead, chromium and volatile organic compounds at the plant, operated by TCI Inc. in West Ghent, N.Y., as concern rose about the toxic chemicals that might have been spread by smoke and soot over farms and homes.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
As they prepare for a cleanup of the site of the Aug. 1-2 fire, which is to begin on Monday, state environmental officials are emphasizing that testing so far has turned up very low levels of toxic contamination and that it seems to have been contained in the building that burned, sparing surrounding areas.
?Everything we have so far looks very favorable,? said Keith Goertz, a regional spill engineer with the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
State health officials say the fire posed ?no threat to public health? because tests did not detect the PCBs, the toxic chemicals of most concern, offsite. They said they were found mostly at low levels among the transformers, oil containers and electrical equipment managed by TCI.
PCBs, which have been linked to cancer, the impairment of immune and reproductive functions and other problems, were widely used for electrical insulation but were banned in the 1970s by the federal government. They are still present in old equipment like lighting fixtures as well as transformers of the sort processed by TCI.
For weeks since the fire, residents and local officials have been seeking reassurance that they are safe from exposure to pollutants. On Thursday night, around 300 people attended a meeting with local and state agencies in West Ghent to express their worries and to request additional testing.
?I certainly trust the state and federal agencies, but I absolutely understand the concerns of people,? said Didi Barrett, the New York State assemblywoman who organized the meeting. ?One of the issues that remains for me is, what happens to the soil? There are a lot of organic farms in the area. It?s just hard to imagine there?s no impact.?
Local officials attributed some of the anxiety to what they said were their own faulty communications, including the lack of an emergency system that would have allowed them to issue a mass alert asking people to stay indoors and close their windows so they would not breathe in the air outdoors while the fire was raging during the night.
?When that happened, we dropped the ball,? said Robin Andrews, a local supervisor who is running for the New York State Senate this year. ?We?ll correct that part. We were lucky that nothing terrible happened.?
But she expressed some frustration with state officials? communications after the fire as well.?The state needs to be responsive to what people are asking,? she said. ?They heard that loud and clear.?
To that end, ?officials at the state Department of Environmental Conservation say they plan to post updates about the cleanup and the department?s findings at the agency?s Web site. After the debris is cleared, an environmental investigation will follow with more testing of soil and groundwater, they added.

Israel's immigration police detain African migrants, despite pending visa appeals
The Immigration and Population Authority has arrested three migrants from South Sudan who are seriously ill and are waiting for their asylum applications to be considered on humanitarian grounds. The three - one of whom has AIDS, another has epilepsy and the third has chronic arthritis and liver dysfunction - were arrested three days ago.
Two of the three have submitted official requests to stop their deportation, in keeping with the procedures of the Immigration and Population Authority. According to those procedures, steps are not to be taken to deport people whose applications are under review. The third person was arrested after he was sent to bring a certain medical form attesting to his condition. His application was submitted for him by the United Nations Refugee Commission.
Because the state has lifted the group protection from deportation it had accorded citizens of South Sudan in Israel, deeming it safe for them to return home, the three are asking that they be allowed to remain in Israel on medical grounds. The three say their fate is sealed if they return to their home country, considering the poor medical care available there.
The Physicians Without Borders NGO has asked the tribunal that oversees incarceration to release the three immediately and that deportation proceedings be halted. In the case of one of the asylum-seekers, the group wrote that it was his right to remain in the country in light of his medical condition. Regarding another of the three men, the group wrote: "From information conveyed to Physicians Without Borders by a representative of the U.N. Commission of Refugees, who visited him in prison, for the first two days he received no medical treatment and the medications he had were taken from him."
The group warned that "such conduct could harm the patient, especially in light of the fact that the Immigration and Population Authority is aware of his medical situation and the medications he needs were readily available."
Physicians Without Borders said it decried the man's incarceration "considering that he acted according to the Interior Ministry's own procedures in order to exercise his rights vis-a-vis the authorities. The place of such a person is not in custody, both because of his medical condition and mainly because of the fact that he is in the process of exercising his rights."
Shahar Shoham, head of the Migrants and Refugees Department of Physicians for Human Rights, said: "We are seeing a significant worsening of the attitude toward sick people who are seeking to prevent their deportation on medical grounds. What we had seen until recently is that people who submitted applications were not arrested."
However, Shoham said, despite the fact that procedure says people must not be deported while their cases are under review, and the requests of all three individuals in question are under review, they have been arrested "just to make their lives miserable and to pressure them to sign a waiver that they are leaving of their own free will."
Shoham said the medical conditions of all three are well-documented.
The Immigration and Population Authority said in response: "The applications of the three are under review even while they are being held, and there is no reason not to do so. There is medical treatment [for those] in custody. They will not be deported until there is a response to their application."

Hoboken, N.J. August 14, 2012. John Wiley & Sons, Inc., today announced revised licensing arrangements for proprietary journals published under the Wiley Open Access program. The journals will adopt the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) licence which allows commercial use of published articles.
The Wiley Open Access portfolio also includes journals published with society partners, many of which will similarly transfer to the Creative Commons Attribution licence.
Wiley is responding to recent developments in funder and government policies and supports the sustainable evolution of scientific publishing. The change will be implemented immediately.
Rachel Burley, Vice President and Director, Open Access, commented, "Wiley is committed to meeting the evolving needs of the authors who wish to provide open access to the published articles that convey the results of their research."
Burley continued, "Our announcement today concerns Wiley's fully open access journals. We are also reviewing the licensing arrangements for our hybrid program OnlineOpen, our open access option for individual articles published in subscription journals. In consultation with our publishing partners, we aim to continue to develop and deliver sustainable open access products providing author choice and high levels of service."
In the first instance, the journals moving to the CC-BY licence are Brain and Behavior, Ecology and Evolution, MicrobiologyOpen, Cancer Medicine, Food Science & Nutrition, Evolutionary Applications, Geoscience Data Journal and EMBO Molecular Medicine.
The CC-BY licence allows (with the correct attribution of the original creator) for the copying, distribution and transmission of the work. Adaption and commercial use is also permitted.

Analyst rates CVS, Walgreen shares 'Buy'
Walgreen Co. and CVS Caremark Corp. are both poised to improve their earnings performance heading into second half of 2012 and next year, according to a Cantor Fitzgerald analyst who started coverage of the stocks with "Buy" ratings.
THE OPINION: Walgreen, the largest U.S. drugstore chain, will be helped by the recovery of some business it lost due to a recently concluded contract dispute with pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts Holding Co., analyst Ajay Jain said in a Wednesday research note.
Walgreen used to fill prescriptions for St. Louis-based Express Scripts, which runs drug plans for employers, insurers and other customers as the nation's largest pharmacy benefits manager, or PBM. The companies let a contract between them expire at the end of last year, but they said last month they will resume doing business in September.
Walgreen, based in Deerfield, Ill., also will be helped by the impact of acquisitions and generic drugs, which help pharmacy profitability because they provide a wider margin between the cost for the pharmacy to purchase the drugs and the reimbursement received.
CVS Caremark, based in Woonsocket, R.I., is the second largest drugstore chain, and it also operates one of the largest PBMs. Jain said in a separate note operating income is set to improve around 15 percent this year for both of those segments.
"After several transition years, we look for continued earnings improvement in both CVS' retail and (PBM) operations in 2012," he said.
The analyst set a target of $43 for Walgreen and $55 for CVS Caremark.
THE STOCKS: Walgreen shares climbed 16 cents to $35.60 in Wednesday afternoon trading, while CVS shares rose 12 cents to $44.24. Broader trading indexes were mixed.

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) ? Computers and personal items worth more than $60,000 have been stolen from the Northern California home of the late?Steve?Jobs.
The San Jose Mercury News reports 35-year-old Kariem McFarlin, of Alameda, has been arrested and charged with residential burglary and selling stolen property. He remains jailed with bail set at $500,000 pending an Aug. 20 court hearing.
Santa Clara County prosecutor Tom Flattery won't say if the items taken from the Palo Alto home on July 17 belonged to?Jobs?or another family member. The house was surrounded by a temporary construction barrier in July.
The co-founder of Apple Inc. died last year at the age of 56.
Flattery refused to discuss details about the case.
The prosecutor says McFarlin was likely unaware of the home's significance.

Joe Biden: Mitt Romney Will "Put Y'all Back in Chains"
Vice President Joe Biden raised eyebrows at a Virginia campaign rally today when he said Mitt Romney and his economic ideas would "put y'all back in chains."
Of the Republican ticket and newly-minted VP nominee Paul Ryan's budget plan, Biden said: "They’ve said it. Every Republican’s voted for it."
"Look at what they value. Look at their budget and what they’re proposing. [Romney] said in the first 100 days, he’s going to let the big banks once again write their own rules – unchain Wall Street ... They’re going to put y’all back in chains."
While Biden likely meant that Americans would be shackled, metaphorically, by corporate greed, his words conjured up more provocative imagery.
Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul said “The comments made by the vice president are not acceptable in our political discourse and demonstrate yet again that the Obama campaign will say and do anything to win this election."
Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter didn't back down.
"I think [President Obama] probably agrees with Joe Biden's sentiments," Cutter said. "He's using a metaphor to talk about what's going to happen."
"I appreciate the faux outrage from the Romney campaign. If you want to talk about use of words, take a look at [Romney's] stump speech where he basically calls the president un-American. The bottom line is that we have no problem with those comments."
