Open-source game console Ouya closed its Kickstarter with $8.59 million pledged.
Ouya, the $100 game console based on Google?s Android operating system, is officially becoming a reality. Ouya?s Kickstarter campaign ended early this morning with $8.59 million pledged by 63,416 interested gamers. The campaign had set its goal at just $950,000.
Ouya?s success has been known for sometime ? it reached its $950,000 goal in just 12 hours, breaking the Kickstarter record for most money pledged in a single day.
Ouya runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and packs a Tegra 3 processor, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, one USB 2.0 port, 8GB of internal storage, and an SD card slot. The Ouya supports up to four wireless controllers.
Ouya is the creation of gaming startup Boxer8, which is headed by Julie Uhrman, former vice president of digital distribution for IGN and GameFly, and a long-time gaming industry veteran. Yves Behar, COO of mobile accessories company Jawbone, designed the Ouya. And former Xbox chief Ed Fries serves as an adviser to the project.
While Ouya breaks out of the traditional game console system, which is dominated by the likes of Microsoft with its Xbox 360, and Sony?s PlayStation 3, the industry has already begun to jump on board. During its Kickstarter run, Ouya gained backing from a number of established game-makers, including Square-Enix, which has pledged to port Final Fantasy III to Ouya, and Namco Bandai, which is in talks with Boxer8 to bring over a number of classic franchises, including Pac-Man, Galaga, and Tekken.
Developers, who coughed up a $699 pledge for a rooted Ouya console, will begin receiving their units in December. All other pledges who donated $95 or more to the campaign will get their Ouya as early as March of next year.
