They further note that,

This perspective is put into context by the first paragraph of the "Discussion" section of this paper by Kibel et al.:
A man with clinically localized?[prostate cancer]?is faced with a challenging process of selecting the optimal treatment. He must choose between radical therapy and surveillance for a cancer that may pose an uncertain threat to his longevity or quality of life.If he chooses treatment, none has been proven superior in terms of quantity or quality of life. In the absence of data from randomized trials, one must rely on observational studies, although these may be biased. In this study, to our knowledge the largest comparative analysis of contemporary patients treated according to current treatment standards,?[radical prostatectomy]?was associated with improved overall survival compared to EBRT and brachytherapy after adjusting for major confounders, and improved?[prostate cancer-specific mortality]?compared to EBRT. However, the differences in adjusted survival among treatment modalities at 10 years were small, particularly for [prostate cancer-specific mortality].

Marshall Fine: Movie review: On The Ice
Life doesn't seem to get much colder than it probably is during a winter in Barrow, the Alaskan town at the center of Andrew MacLean's On the Ice, a tale of living and dying on the edge of the world.
Indeed, the central action of the film takes place out on the frozen ocean, where the locals regularly hunt for seals as a source of meat - using rifles and snowmobiles. It's essentially the middle of nowhere, the shifting, icy ocean with water still flowing beneath.
There's a simplicity to MacLean's story-telling that is deceptive. The emotions are right out front in a community regularly confronted with the effects of alcoholism and meth use. Drinking is a definite issue to the two teens at the center of the film: Aivaaq (Frank Irelan) and Qalli (Josiah Patkotak).
Aivaaq is the student with a future: He'll escape to college in the fall, his chance out of the dead-end world of Barrow. Qalli is his lifelong friend: his mother hopelessly alcoholic, his father long dead, himself on the road to alcoholism. Qalli's a carefree kid without a future.
After a night of partying, Aivaaq goes home early, but connects with Qalli and their friend James to go hunting early in the morning. Aivaaq arrives to find Qalli and James fighting bitterly. When Aivaaq sees James about to kill Qalli with a shovel, he stops him - and after a scuffle, James winds up dead, having fallen on a knife Aivaaq was holding. Qalli, however, recovers consciousness and assumes that he killed James. Aivaaq lets him think it - and they dispose of the body, sending James and his snowmobile down a hole into the water.
Then they clean up the crime scene and race home to report that James just went through the ice while they were hunting. That triggers a huge search effort and intense focus on the two guilt-ridden teens. Qalli thinks he's a killer and begins to come apart; Aivaaq knows who really killed James and tries to keep his unraveling pal from disintegrating altogether.
But secrets seldom stay that way and the path of the story in this film is pretty inevitable. Thankfully, MacLean spends most of his time focused on Aivaaq, because Irelan is a wonderfully poker-faced actor. Patkotak, on the other hand, seems to be working a little more obviously in scenes where he must play impairment and anxiety.
For good measure, MacLean throws in a conscientious, seemingly rule-bound father for Aivaaq. But the director still manages to surprise the audience with that character, who provides the moral underpinnings that have kept his son on the narrow path.
On the Ice is stark, unadorned, timeless and yet of the moment. Wear your mittens.

Can This Be the Catholic Moment in the Arts? | Catholic Exchange

?Irish poets, learn your trade.?
So W.B. Yeats admonished his fellow Irish poets in his celebrated poem, ?Under Ben Bulben.? With a slight amendment, it?s an admonition that could well apply to our Catholic artists.
The other day Emily Stimpson, a blogger over at CatholicVote.org, wrote an inspired piece called ?Telling the Catholic Story.? In it she laments, after noting certain admirable exceptions, the current state of Catholic art, in particular our storytelling in the media of film, television and literature. Her lament pointed up the question: why aren?t Catholics today known for creating artistic masterpieces, or at least compelling works of art? Stimpson herself has difficulties zeroing in on the reason:
So again, why? Why can?t we match in quality and skill the media being made by our secular counterparts?
I?ve put that question to a lot of smart people over the last couple weeks and the answers they gave were plentiful: a dearth of excellent training programs at faithful Catholic schools, a reluctance and/or inability to invest substantially in high quality media, poor understanding of the medium of media itself, a distrust of Hollywood and the tools of social media, and the misguided belief that what we have to say is so compelling that we don?t need to worry about how we say it.
Those are all good answers. They?re true answers. But I don?t find them entirely satisfying. They explain why the media we?re making now is not up to snuff, but they don?t explain how the Church of the Sistine Chapel and Mozart?s Requiem became the Church of Therese and There Be Dragons.
Catholics once financed and made the greatest works of art the world has ever known. We used the primary mediums of the day?painting, sculpture, literature, and music?to express the beauty and glory of God, the truth about the human person, and the pathos of the human condition. We understood the power of beauty and the power of story, and for centuries, creating art that reflected that understanding came as naturally to Catholic artists as breathing.=
Stimpson is right that the various answers she received to her question were all good and true. The diagnosis must certainly be a complex one. Catholic education, the American reception to Vatican II, scorn of Hollywood and the entertainment industry generally, lack of money?all of these are contributing factors to the current Catholic malaise in the arts. I would add that the political culture wars of the last forty years, as crucially important as those have been, have tempted Catholics to neglect the power of art to shape culture. They have led to the distrust of the entertainment industry that Stimpson mentions in her piece.
But there is one other reason for the malaise in Catholic art that I would like to identify, one that I think lies even closer to the nub of the problem:
The absence of a devotion to craft.
I choose the word ?devotion? here carefully. Devotion indicates love, passion, total commitment. For the Catholic artist, his or her work must be inspired, first and foremost, by devotion to God. But this is not enough to make a beautiful and powerful work of art. The devotion to God must ?spill over? into a devotion to craft. And here I choose the word ?craft? carefully. For anyone who writes a novel or poem or screenplay will admit to ?loving? what he is doing. But there is far more to a craft than this.
To be devoted to a craft means to submit oneself to a discipline existing outside one?s thoughts and feelings. And such disciplines do not arise out of nowhere. They come into being and flourish within traditions of thought and practice, traditions that often stretch centuries into the past.
In recent decades Catholic artists seem to have forgotten this sense of devotion to a craft tradition. But when one looks to past examples of great Catholic artists, such devotion is everywhere in evidence.

Return of 'third shift' brings hope to auto workers

Anthony Pylant, an idled auto worker from Tennessee, was relieved and excited when he got a letter that a General Motors assembly plant in Flint, Mich., was adding a third shift.
?You don?t know what you got until it?s gone and man, we didn?t realize what we had, you know, until we lost it,? Pylant said.
In 2009, the Spring Hill, Tenn., GM plant where Pylant worked shut down. Pylant searched for work for two years, but nothing he found matched the money or benefits he had before he was laid off.
?It?s sort of a pride thing,? Pylant said.? ?It really hurt, so when this came up. It was like, I got to do what I know how to do, you know.?
In November of last year, Pylant and two of his co-workers from the Tennessee plant moved into a sparse apartment in Flint, Mich.
?After a lot of crying and tears and packing up, here all three of us are in Michigan,? Pylant said.
Pylant and his roommates, Dave Gray and Marcus Tyler, pack their lunches and travel to their 11 p.m. shift together five nights a week. They work on the assembly line until 7 a.m.?
?You got to be a vampire, sleep during the day while everybody else is living their life,? Pylant said.
The third shift in Flint is one of?five places where General Motors has added a graveyard shift since it received a $50 billion bailout from the government in 2009.?
Nationwide, other automakers have added third shifts as well. In Belvidere, Ill., Chrysler recently announced plans to add a third shift by the summer. Ford recently added a third shift to a plant in Chicago.??
?We have studied third shifts and we?re very careful about when we put them on.? The last thing we want to do is put on a third shift, bring people in from around the country, disrupt their lives, bring them here and then something happens,? said Larry Zahner, manufacturing manager for General Motors North America.? ?So we?ve been very careful assuring when we put the third shift on, it?s going to stick.?
Two years ago, GM shut down the third shift at the Flint assembly plant after the automaker was forced to file for bankruptcy and ask the government for help.? GM pared down pension packages, got rid of thousands of jobs, hundreds of dealerships and watched their stock price tumble.
Now the automaker that some nicknamed ?Government Motors? in the wake of the economic collapse appears to be turning a corner.? It is now the number one automaker in the world, a title it regained in part to Toyota?s struggles after the devastating tsunami.? The company is expected to announce its 2011 net income Thursday and some have predicted it will be a record high for the company.
?While what?s good for General Motors is good for the U.S. may not be the slogan of the day, when we create a job, we still help the economy and we create more jobs outside,? Zahner said.
The addition of the third shift in Flint has added 750 jobs at the plant. Most of the jobs have gone to long laid-off auto workers. The jobs pay around $29 an hour with benefits.
Union local head Barry Campbell and plant chief Amy Farmer said that since the bailout, there?s been a shift in how labor and management relations interact with one another.
?We strategize together, we plan projects together, we execute together,? Farmer said.
Both Farmer and Campbell were born and raised in Flint.? They say that the third shift makes them hopeful about Flint?s future.
?We?re always looking for available floor space.? I want to fill every inch.? I want all the jobs.? I want to continue to build trucks.? I want our kids hopefully down the road to have jobs too, right here in Flint,? Campbell said.
Flint, nicknamed ?Vehicle City,? has long been emblematic of the rise and fall of the auto industry.? It has shrunk to almost half the city it once was. In its heyday, there were 80,000 auto related jobs, now there are only 7,000 auto related jobs.? The iconic plant, founded in 1947, once rolled vehicles like the Corvette and Bel Air off its line.? Now, it churns out 684 Chevrolet Silverado HD trucks each day.? Experts say that the increasing demand for the heavy duty truck, named truck of the year by Motor Trend in 2011, is a positive economic sign.
?I think the Flint assembly plant and the heavy duty trucks here are a real economic indicator of where we?re going.? People are going back to work.? Companies are starting to buy pickup trucks for their businesses.? This is all great news,? said Joanne Muller, the Detroit bureau chief for Forbes Media who has covered the auto industry for 20 years.
Muller said that the jobs gain at the assembly plant is rippling through the community.??
?They say for every auto assembly job, there are 10 jobs that are added, whether it?s through suppliers, hairdressers, bars,? Muller said.? ?It rolls through a community and you can really see it with the ups and downs of Michigan, you know? When the auto industry is doing well, Michigan is doing well.? When it?s not, nobody is doing well.?
Three miles from the GM plant, Oakley Industries has added 12 full time jobs at their sub assembly plant.?? Workers there assemble tires that are then used at the GM plant.? A parts supplier, LSI, also added 60 new jobs.
On a visit by NBC News to Angelo?s Coney Island, a 63-year-old restaurant in Flint, owner Neil Helmkay said that the increase in plant workers means that he?ll likely add a few more waitresses.
?I?ve probably increased business anywhere from 5 percent to 8 percent and as GM gets more jobs in the area, of course we?re going to grow along with everybody else,? Helmkay said.
Forbes bureau chief Muller described the auto industry as ?woven into the fabric of Flint? and said that GM?s decision to add a third shift in Flint was as much a political decision as a business one.? ?
?GM made the decision to invest here because it was politically the right thing to do.? They owed it to their workers.? They owed it to their heritage.? They owed it to the government,? Muller said.? ?Even though it?s smaller, their presence here is smaller than it used to be, I think there?s a connection and there always will be.?
For Pylant, the once idled GM worker who has returned to the assembly line, the job is precious.
?You know, I didn?t go to college, but I?m making a good salary.? It?s the last stand of the middle class family,? Pylant said.? ?There?s a million people across this nation who would swap spots with us in a heartbeat, so I don?t take it for granted at all.?

I am writing to tell you that the Shutzstaffel ?SS? symbol has a deeper meaning than the USMC is aware of.? The USMC spokesmen at Camp Pendleton have no idea of what they are talking about and the Marines that are using it aren?t probably even aware of the history of the ?SS? usage, particularly with the 1st Marine Division Scout ?Snipers, which is where it started.
This whole thing started with the Neo-Nazis led by Tom and John Metzger of Fallbrook, California in the 80?s.? There were a few Marines at 1st Reconnaissance Battalion who were active with the neo-nazi?s.? One of them was pretty well known as a recruiter.? I heard of this Marine from a friend of mine who was a fellow scout-sniper instructor with me at the USMC Scout-sniper instructor school (SSIS) in Quantico, Virginia from 1982-1986.? My friend was stationed at 1st Recon before coming to the SSIS and mentioned this Marine in passing when talking about weird characters we had met over the years.? Believe me, this ?nazi? Marine wasn?t well looked upon.? (I actually ran into the neo-nazi Marine while stationed at Marine Corps Security Forces, Pacific in 1992 or so.? He had been assigned as a student at MCSF and I was the Officer in Charge of weapons training.? I noticed a Nazi ?Blood and Honor? tattoo on his arm and asked him if he was ever in 1st Recon Bn.? He replied he had been.? I then asked him if he was still a Nazi and he kind of turned pale and replied ?No Sir, I gave it up for Lent?.? I turned him in to the unit commander and he had his security clearance revoked and was assigned to other duties.)
Back to SSIS.? About 1984 a SSgt was assigned to SSIS who had been the head instructor at Camp Pendletons scout-sniper school.? He brought out patches and drawings that were being popularized at the 1st Mar Div school and units.? They included skull and crossbone designs and the ?SS? symbols.? The skull and crossbone design was exactly the same as the one used by the White Aryan Resistance (WAR) crew out of Fallbrook.? These designs caught on with the mentally challenged and less mature element of the scout-sniper community.? Some of the guys event went so far are to getting a version of the ?SS? tattooed on their calves, so as not to attract attention, unless of course they were at physical training wearing shorts? it was all very stupid.? And apparently the mentality of some of the scout-sniper community hasn?t improved much since then.
The ?SS? even made it to the Army National Guard sniper program.? In 1995 some of the Army National Guard snipers developed a challenge coin that had the ?SS? on one side.? A soldier was ?caught? with one, at a bar of all places and an official US Army investigation ensued and a directive went out that the ?SS? symbol was not allowed.? I still have one of the coins.
Having said all of this I am positive that there is no dark ?Marathon Man-ish? conspiracy within the USMC scout-sniper program.? I imagine if the community were interviewed they would almost all show a deep respect for Israel and the IDF.? But there also may be a ?respect? of sorts for the dedication of the ?SS? soldier but most of them probably don?t understand the whole history of the Waffen and the holocaust as most of American society get their history lessons from MTV these? days.
What you DO have is a bunch of boys that can shave, showing their stupidity and ignorance by carrying on this unauthorized and shameful tradition and the Marine Corps spokesmen don?t have a clue to the history of this ?SS? stuff and its connections to the Neo-Nazis in Fallbrook.
I would suggest a look at the book series ?DEATH FROM AFAR? by Rocky Chandler.? You?ll find a ton of evidence in those books.

The Internet marketing study found that many small businesses simply aren?t leveraging some of their key online marketing assets ? domain names that contain keywords, aging websites and good momentum with the number of website pages and inbound links.
?Clearly, some small businesses have begun to secure their place at the top of major search engines. Others should learn how to integrate SEO principles to catch up to or run past the competition,? Murray said.
For example, small businesses often use text page headers rather than graphics to introduce web site content. At least the web sites aren?t dominated by graphic page headers that search engines don?t index like regular text, Murray said, noting that the text page headers can help with search engine rankings depending on the keywords they feature.
Other highlights from the study include:
Social media ? 78% of small businesses don?t feature social media profiles on their web sites
Link building ? 70% of small business web sites have at least 100 inbound links
Google Places ? Only 26% of small businesses have owner-verified listings
Use of title on home pages ? Only 51% of small business web sites use home page titles for strategic keywords

iPad 3 launch date of March 7 looking likely (Digital Trends)
A website that called it right with the iPhone 4S?s launch date says that the iPad 3 will be unveiled on Wednesday March 7.
In a report on its website Monday, iMore said that ?according to sources who have been reliable in the past,? Apple will launch the third generation of its popular tablet in a matter of weeks, a device which it says will feature a 2048?1536 Retina display, a quad-core A6 processor and possibly 4G LTE networking.
The rumored launch date ties in with a recent AllThingsD report which said it had information suggesting that Apple would unveil the eagerly anticipated device in the first week of next month.
The AllThingsD report also said that the event would be held in the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco, a location not unused to big Apple launches.
As for what to expect with the new model, speculation is, of course, rife. But in contrast to last year?s largely wayward rumors regarding what turned out to be the iPhone 4S, recent reports on the kind of things we can expect with the next iteration of the Cupertino company?s tablet have been more focused.
Besides the Retina display and quad-core processor, the iPad 3 is expected to have improved photographic capability and better battery life. If the recently released image of what was supposedly the back of the new device is anything to go by, then the actual look of the iPad 3 is expected to be pretty much identical to the current model.
Apple?s iPad dominates the tablet market, with the company shifting more than 55 million units since its launch in April 2010. No other company has come anywhere close to matching Apple?s strong sales with tablet devices of their own. Only Amazon, with its recently launched Kindle Fire tablet, has been able to sell a similar device in any significant number, though of course its simpler, cheaper offering is located at the opposite end of the tablet spectrum.
