Statoil Delivers Plan For NOK4.4 Billion Oil Investment

Norwegian oil giant Statoil ASA (STO) Friday delivered a plan to the Norwegian government for the NOK4.4 billion Svalin field development in the North Sea, and said it expected first production in 2013.

The fields are expected to contain 75 million barrels of oil equivalent, all crude, with a comfortable break even oil price of $24, according to operator Statoil.

The Svalin M and Svalin C discoveries will be exploited in a so-called "fast-track" development, with production starting in November 2013 and June 2014 respectively. Statoil has a 57% stake in Svalin, while partner Petoro AS holds 30% and ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Norway AS holds 13%.

The oil will be processed from the Grane platform for processing, and then be transported along the Grane production through a pipeline to the mainland.

"This is a fantastic way to make our fields last longer and get more out of them," said Statoil's Ivar Aasheim when presenting the plan to Norway's Minister of Petroleum and Energy Ola Borten Moe.

Mr. Moe told reporters he did not believe that oil prices would fall to levels which could hurt the value of Norwegian oil resources in the future.

He also said Chinese oil companies were welcome to apply for drilling licenses on the Norwegian Continental Shelf if they so wished.

MS & Sony Investing A Lot Into New Domain Names

Looks like Microsoft and Sony are getting extremely keen on getting into the
race for new top-level domain names. In case you didn't hear, the Internet Corporation
for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) started to issue specific domain applications
from huge corporations.

Conventional Internet abbreviations such as '.com' and '.net' are being replaced by specific ones. So, according to reports, Microsoft has now allegedly invested $2.035 million in securing domain names such as '.windows' '.xbox' '.bing' and '.skype'. Sony's put down $555k in an effort to grab names like ".sony" and ".xperia". ICANN is asking at least $185,000 just to place a bid on a specific URL.

Meanwhile, the ICANN is taking its time with evaluations, up to 20 months, which is probably when the first examples of these new-fangled URLs are going to emerge.

Yeah, I'm gonna start bidding for ".easymoney" right now.

Does Your Pool Use Hayward Valves

When summertime inches closer, everyone is thinking about their outdoor plans. Maybe you?re planning a great vacation, or will be spending a lot of time outdoors. But if you?re lucky enough to be the owner of a home with a swimming pool, hopefully your pump and filter system use Hayward valves. Otherwise, you probably have a few other things on your mind.

A lot of fun can be had if you?re the owner of a swimming pool. But, if you ask anyone else who owns one, they will tell you not to wait until it?s summertime to make sure it?s in working order. You may have secured the pool for the winter at the end of last season, but you?ll need to check for any possible problems come springtime.

Even if you live in a cooler zone which experiences harsh winters, if your pool and equipment were properly winterized, getting it up and running for the new season shouldn?t be too difficult. Most swimming pool equipment manufacturers give detailed guidance on what can and can?t be left out for the winter, and how to secure items that cannot be moved. However, even if you?ve followed these guidelines exactly, sometimes nature has other ideas in mind.

The first step in preparing your pool for the new season would be to inspect the cover for any possible damage. Having a safe and secure cover is very important to protect your pool from the weather, or tree limbs and other debris. A damaged cover would need to be replaced before the end of the season.

Now that the cover has been removed, the pool itself should be examined for cracks or any other problems. The pump and filter will also need to be checked out. Any equipment that was stored indoors should be taken outside for thorough examination. Next, any equipment that was too large to bring indoors should be thoroughly checked out.

If you don?t find any damage once you have examined all of the parts, then you can begin assembling the system. Once everything is assembled, be sure to check all of the hoses and valves to make sure the connections are good. Smaller parts could become vulnerable from being exposed to the elements, or just from normal wear.

If any damage is discovered, head to your nearest pool supply store to seek out replacement parts. If you?re fortunate enough to have a system that uses Hayward valves, it is probably in good working order. But should you need a replacement, it should be easy to find as Hayward is a leading supplier of swimming pool pumps, filters, and other equipment.

Find the best deals on Hayward valves by taking a look at an informational website which also has a great overview of the Hayward multiport valve.

Abbas offers Israel dialogue for amnesty, arms

PARIS (Reuters) -- President Mahmoud Abbas said on Friday he was ready to hold dialogue with Israel if it freed prisoners and re-armed his police, but there could be no full peace talks without a freeze on West Bank settlements.

"We recently told them that if Israel accepted to free prisoners and allow us to re-arm the police then we would again sit at the same table as Netanyahu," Abbas said, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"If Mr Netanyahu agrees ... then we will establish a dialogue, but that doesn't mean a negotiation," Abbas told reporters during a visit to Paris.

US-sponsored negotiations on the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel stalled in 2010 in a dispute over Israeli settlements in the occupied territory, areas of which it has vowed to annex under any eventual accord.

Israel has in the past released prisoners from Abbas's Fatah faction in what it described as goodwill gestures toward the Palestinians.

The Israelis also regularly coordinate with Abbas's security forces in the West Bank and have a say on the degree to which they are armed and deployed.

The Palestinian leader reiterated his insistence on a total freeze on settlements, which most world powers consider illegal, saying it was wrong to call describe this as a "precondition".

Responding to Abbas's remarks, Netanyahu spokesman Mark Regev said in Jerusalem: "Israel remains ready for the immediate resumption of peace talks without any preconditions."

Asked whether Israel planned any prisoner releases or arms handovers in the foreseeable future, Regev had no immediate comment.

Abbas was in Paris to firm up aid pledges from France, to which Paris gave 10 million euros ($12.47 million), and seek Hollande's support for recognition of a future Palestinian state and for unity talks between Fatah and Hamas.

Making his first comments on the Middle East peace process since being elected president in May, Hollande said that everything had to be done to restart the long-stalled talks.

Hollande stopped short of offering to recognize a Palestinian state without a peace deal, but he said he hoped to accept an offer to visit the region.

"Today, we must do everything to facilitate the recognition of a Palestinian state via a negotiated process," Hollande said. "Dialogue must start again and the sooner the better."

Hollande's predecessor, conservative Nicolas Sarkozy, took a strong stand on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, proposing United Nations observer status for the Palestinians last year and setting out a one-year road map for peace.

Paris also broke from its allies in October when it backed Palestinian efforts to become a full member of UNESCO, the UN's cultural arm and the first UN agency to grant the Palestinians full membership.

Abbas said that as the Palestinians had failed to get the number of votes required at the UN Security Council to gain full nation recognition, he would go to the UN General Assembly to gain non-member status if there was no progress on the peace process.

"We will ask for recognition at the UN General Assembly to obtain non-member status," he said. "Switzerland and the Vatican have taken that path previously."

Israel has occupied East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza Strip since 1967.

Sheriff: 4 die in fiery crash near Phoenix

(AP) ? An SUV slammed into the rear of a sedan and the car burst into flames, killing four people Saturday on Phoenix's western outskirts, authorities said.

The sedan's driver and three passengers were trapped by the crash on a county road near the town of Buckeye as their vehicle became engulfed in flames, said officer Chris Hegstrom, a spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff Office.

He said that the four were killed and the driver of the SUV was rushed to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The car was stopped on Maricopa County Road 85, possibly preparing to turn off the roadway, when the crash occurred about 3 p.m., he said.

"Car No. 1 stopped heading eastbound, (and) an eastbound SUV did not see the stopped car; collided with the back end of car No. 1," Hegstrom said.

Motorist Tom Wheeler told Fox 10 News that he was driving home from work when he saw the fire consume the small car.

"People were throwing water and dirt under the car to get the fire out and it didn't help," he said.

Hegstrom said authorities were investigating various elements of the accident, including if excess speed played any role.

News footage of the aftermath showed the passenger car with its rear end crushed and the SUV with damage to its front end.

The Owl Club: tea party garlands

Last month I wrote about the fun I had making decorative papers using that fun childhood craft, potato printing (read the post). Well, here's what it turned into!Once again this is for the tea party we're having on Tuesday afternoon, to say farewell to a dear friend who is moving abroad (home) with her family. She is a crafty type and has made lovely decorations for several fun family parties, so I wanted to do something special to send her off in style. It was hard to take photos because the wind was making the teapots and teacups dance! It looked so pretty! I should have made a video instead. My apple trees are modelling here, but I'll be sure to take photos on the day: this is but one of several garlands I made (plus the fabric bunting and a paper banner saying, "we'll miss you").

So how did I make these? Well, I simply drew around teacup and teapot templates and cut them out (the paper is decorated on both sides). I'm grateful to the magical craft book Everything Alice for the templates! Then I put them through a laminator and cut them out again, leaving a margin so each piece is secure between the plastic. Now that they are laminated they are both durable and waterproof (quite useful for the UK!) Also I like that they are shiny - it makes the colours pop.I punched little holes each side with a small hole punch, and threaded pieces of ribbon through, securing each with a knot, and alternating blue and red ribbon. I used 6 teapots and 15 teacups for each garland.

This wasn't an idea found in a book or on Pinterest - I just made it up! It is extremely easy, but rather time consuming to make. It is quite good for busy people and parents, because I found I could chip away at the project here and there in odd moments, and gradually bring it all together. One evening my husband helped out, cutting out some of the shapes - but he found it fiddly and irritating, whereas I found it meditative and relaxing!

I think these would look pretty in pastel-printed papers, or tissue paper (the sun would glow through). Also my son thought it was like a train with LOTS of carriages - it would be awesome to make a real train for a kid's party! Sadly I don't think I'll have time to do this for my son's birthday party at the end of this month: he may find he has tea garlands for his train-themed party!
