My cousin is coming to live with me but I'm not her legal guardian ...

This happened to me when I was in high school. I wanted to go to a different high school for sports, but I needed to live in a different area. In order to prove that I lived there, my mother would have had to transfer guardianship to my grandparents, who did live there, and I would have had to prove that I actually lived there. However, the residency policies probably vary by school district.

See if you can explain the situation to the guidance counselor, as they are allowed to make transfer recommendations in the best interest of the student or help you come up with a less extreme solution, but they may insist that her parents transfer at least temporary guardianship to you, and then they would not be able to claim her as a dependent (but you would). I ended up having to stay at my old school.

Good luck!
