Sports hero worship in play in PSU fallout?

Many Penn State students and fans said they're sticking by Joe Paterno, even amidst new allegations that he dropped the ball in his handling of Jerry Sandusky.

For ardent sports fans, defending those in the face of overwhelming proof can be a common occurrence when their hero on the field gets in trouble off it.

Millions are fans of teams and players, but what separates a healthy hobby from blind faith that your hero could do no wrong?

There is nothing wrong with a little team loyalty, but what happens when those you love on the field get in trouble off it?

"In my opinion, Joe Paterno did not change. He did a lot for the school, absolutely," one Penn State student said.

For some, support never waivers, even in the face of proof.

Paterno was just shown to be a key player in covering up the Jerry Sandusky child rape investigations.

Psychologist Dr. Robert Gordon said making excuses for heroes on the field is common for many fans.

"It's really an overcompensation of something that is lacking in themselves. It's why they are so defensive if ever knock the person," Gordon said.

Gordon calls it the "Halo Effect." For those so invested in a person or team, he said it overrides rational thought.

"Person really argues against even if they don't have all the facts. They really need to idealize the person," Gordon said.

That kind of unyielding loyalty, Gordon said, typically comes from those with self esteem issues, or those who are trying to fill a void in their own life by living through others.

"The healthier mind, the more simultaneously you can hold good things and really embrace complexity of individuals and life itself," Gordon said.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with being a fan. Just know on and off the field no one is perfect.

Gordon also said when someone's entire life is so totally invested in someone or something else and that ideal is shattered, it's a very traumatic event.

It's a good time, he said, to take stock, move on and live your own life.
