Amy Elizabeth? Thriving in a Long Distance Relationship

It?s a simple fact that a good relationship will bring out the best in you. They will encourage you, support you and help you flourish. This is true of all relationships, but it is especially true of your romantic relationships. Although relationships with family and friends are important, romantic relationships are unique in their centrality to our lives, and therefore the huge impact they can have on our decisions and life choices.

Being in a long distance relationship is hard. I can empathise; I spent two years in a long distance relationship with Paul. Happily, we now live together and I do not spend all my money on train tickets. However, although that time was difficult, I would not trade it. There can be a joy in a long distance relationship. So often, it feels like survival is the key message of advice targeted at those in long distance relationships, and I find it a bit patronising. Like you don?t already know that Skype is a good idea?

I didn?t want to feel like I was waiting the whole time. Waiting for the weekend, for a week together, for the time that we would live closer together. That?s no fun, and it?s important to remember that your life together is *now*, not in some mythical future-time. So instead of focusing on just surviving, why not focus on thriving instead!

1. Use your time apart constructively?

Chances are that you don?t have exactly the same interests and hobbies as your partner. Use the time apart to your advantage ? watch the television programmes the other hates, spend time on a personal project or pursuing a hobby or sport. Do something to boost your career. You get the idea. Not only will it make your time apart go faster, you?ll both become happier, better people with interesting things to say on the phone every night!

2. Be reliable and consistent

I?ll admit, this is a bit more of a ?survival? style tip, but it?s relevant I swear! The best way to get through a long distance relationship is for both of you to be reliable and consistent. If you say you?re going to call, call. If you usually text when you get home from a night out, text. If you email first thing when you get into work, email. Work out a routine and then, as far as you can, stick to it. It?ll be different for different people ? you might want to speak three times a day or only three times a week. But you already know this, right? The reason I say it is because having that set routine is the basis of letting you thrive. If you know when someone will call you can plan your day better to make the most of it. It relieves the stress and anxiety, and helps you feel supported and cared for. Which of course, leaves a lot more emotional energy for all the other exciting things you will be doing!

3. Let the space between you bring you closer

I totally cringed as I wrote that, but I do think it is worthwhile. One of the best things about long distance relationships is that it forces you to make an effort. You *have* to talk if you are on the phone, so talk! Set clear boundaries and expectations ? they are all the more necessary when you are apart, but it can carry through to the time when you are together. Learn to trust your partner, and work on getting them to trust you too. Talk some more. There are so many ace things about being in a long distance relationship, because you are after all, still in a relationship!

4. Foster your other relationships

An oldie but a goodie. You should never neglect your friends and family just because you are in a romantic relationship, but when you are away from your partner (who is often a major source of emotional and practical support), you need a strong team of excellent people around you more than usual. Enjoy time with the other people that you love, and savour the fact that you have this time to spend with them *because* of your long distance relationship. For me personally, moving to be with Paul (and for Uni) has meant moving away from a large number of my friends ? you can?t have everything unfortunately! So I really appreciated the time I spent with friends before I moved, and I like to think that the strength of those friendships is now enough to survive the long distance too!

5. Don?t put your life on hold

That?s what it all comes down to, at the end of the day. Stop waiting, and start living. Do not pass up opportunities. This is your life right now, and although it might not be an ideal situation you know as well as I do that your romantic relationship is not all you are and all your have.

Do you have any tips for thriving, not just surviving, in a long distance relationship?

What is an Islamist?

Islamists seek to blend Islam and politics, but their movement is a very big tent.

By Dan Murphy,?Staff writer / August 13, 2012

What is the meaning of 'Islamist'?

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

As it's commonly used in modern English, particularly in the press, "Islamist" means "someone who seeks to blend Islam and politics."

But the term, like so many other shorthands, contains multitudes. The Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt is Islamist. So is Al Qaeda, which despises the Brotherhood for participating in politics. And so is Tunisia's Al Nahda, which says it doesn't even want Islamic law mentioned in the constitution.

So "Islamist" is a big tent. And every group inside the tent wants Islam to play a big role in politics, but just how varies.

The Muslim Brotherhood wants Islamic law to eventually be the principle source of formal law in Egypt, but recognizes that not all of society agrees. Legal structures short of that are acceptable for now. Groups like Al Qaeda see anything short of their own radical vision of Islamic law as a form of apostasy that must be fought and defeated.

Then there are groups like Al Nahda, which says it sees the role of Islam in politics as primarily a social one. If they can lead most Tunisians to see alcohol, uncovered women, or interest rates as sinful, the law will eventually follow.

What is the term's Western history?

"Islamist" and "Islamism" originated in French more than 150 years ago as terms to simply describe the faith and its practitioners. That usage was eventually replaced with "Islam" and "Muslim." The term was revived in the 1970s, again by the French, this time to describe the reformist political movements then gaining steam.

Martin Kramer dates the term's crossing into English to roughly 1985, when the French-language "The Islamist movements in contemporary Egypt," by Gilles Kepel, was translated into English.

Though the word "fundamentalism" had been used for the movements, it fell out of favor, largely because there was little that was "fundamental" about their new approaches. By 2002, The Guardian had headlined an opinion piece by Margaret Thatcher "Islamism is the new bolshevism."

Today, the word feels as if it's always been with us. Islamists themselves don't like it, much as they dislike any term that categorizes their beliefs as something distinct from Islam itself, but it's here to stay.

What are the movements' histories?

In the 20th century, as the colonial era came to an end, Islamic leaders looked around, asked themselves "How did we get here?," and decided the problem was that they had gotten away from the core of their faith. Abul Ala Maudadi in India (later Pakistan) founded the Jamaat-e-Islami political party in 1941, which to this day advocates a strict interpretation of Islam.

In Egypt, Sayyid Qutb was an early leader of the Muslim Brotherhood who argued that Muslim nations had fallen from their early grandeur because they had lost the core of their faith. There were similar revival movements from Indonesia to Morocco, all of them grounded in religion but with an expressly political message. These revival movements spawned both the modern Muslim Brotherhood, which eschewed violence in pursuit of its goals decades ago, and the forerunners to the modern Al Qaeda, which has demonstrated its zeal to use violence in pursuit of its ends.

Zuma heads to Zimbabwe to push for reforms

South African President Jacob Zuma will meet Zimbabwean leaders Wednesday to press for political reforms and new elections under a recently finished draft constitution, his spokesman said.

Zuma, the chief mediator on Zimbabwe's political crisis for the regional Southern African Development Community (SADC) bloc, will hold talks with leaders of the country's three main parties in Harare, spokesman Mac Maharaj told AFP Monday.

"It's ongoing work and we are hoping the visit will help Zimbabweans to resolve their problems and hold elections under a new constitution," said Maharaj.

Since February 2009, Zimbabwe has been ruled by a power-sharing government formed by President Robert Mugabe and his chief rival, Morgan Tsvangirai, after violent and inconclusive presidential elections unleashed a political and economic melt-down.

Representatives of the rival parties -- Mugabe's Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF), Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and another MDC faction -- last month finalised a draft constitution meant to pave the way for new elections.

Drafters hope to put it to a referendum this year.

But ZANU-PF has indicated it is unhappy with some provisions and wishes to have them overhauled.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, during a visit to South Africa last week, urged regional leaders to push for the constitution to be speedily adopted.

The new draft constitution would rein in presidential powers while bolstering those of parliament. It would also set down a presidential term limit of 10 years and strip away the president's immunity from prosecution after leaving office.

Mugabe's 32-year rule has been peppered with accusations of widespread rights abuses, and such a provision could see him face prosecution.

SADC holds its annual summit on Friday and Saturday in Mozambique.

Expected Annan replacement urges powers to unite on

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The man tipped to replace Kofi Annan as the U.N.-Arab League mediator on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi of Algeria, urged world leaders on Friday to overcome their differences on the 17-month-old conflict that is slipping deeper into full-scale civil war.

"The U.N. Security Council and regional states must unite to ensure that a political transition can take place as soon as possible," Brahimi said in a statement published on the website of The Elders, an independent group of global leaders committed to peace and human rights.

"Millions of Syrians are clamoring for peace," Brahimi said. "World leaders cannot remain divided any longer, over and above their cries."

It is Brahimi's first public statement on Syria since diplomats told Reuters on Thursday that U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was expected to name the veteran Algerian diplomat as early as next week to replace Annan, barring a last-minute change or cold feet on Brahimi's part.

U.N. diplomats said Brahimi has told Ban and Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby that his condition for accepting the job was that he receive "strong support" from the Security Council, which has been sharply divided on Syria for since the uprising began in March 2011.

It was not immediately clear what Brahimi meant by "strong support," though the diplomats said he was understandably reluctant to take a job that would be extremely difficult to succeed at.

Brahimi, 78, has served as a U.N. special envoy in a series of challenging circumstances, including in Iraq after the U.S. invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein; in Afghanistan both before and after the end of Taliban rule, and in South Africa as it emerged from the apartheid era.

French U.N. Ambassador Gerard Araud, president of the Security Council this month, told reporters Ban was expected to make an announcement about Annan's successor on Monday or Tuesday after consulting with Elaraby.

Annan, a former U.N. secretary-general and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, said he would step down on August 31 because he was not able to carry out his job with the U.N. Security Council's veto powers hopelessly divided and deadlocked.

There are no signs that Brahimi will get his wish anytime soon, if at all. The divisions on the Security Council - above all the split between the United States and Russia - run deep.

Russia, with the aid of China, has vetoed three resolutions criticizing and threatening sanctions against Damascus for its attempt to use military force and heavy arms to crush an increasingly militant opposition.

Washington, U.N. diplomats said, saw little point in replacing Annan since Moscow continues to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and opposes sanctions intended to pressure Damascus into halting the violence.

Moscow, Syria's chief ally and principal arms supplier, blames the United States, Qatar and Saudi Arabia for supporting Syrian rebels, including providing weapons.
