Of course many players were in the hunt and if one or two things had gone their way the results may have been different, but Lee Westwood, narrowed the attention of what let him down, his putting.
He played amazing golf tee to green, but the putts just did not drop, his putting really let him down. He had 128 putts this week compared to Louis Oosthuizen finished in 2nd place who had 110. Of course Lee hit more greens, and the long game practice and the exercises for golf he consistently follows shows that his approach shots and driving were amazing all week..
But I want you to listen to a message and mantra I more commonly use with my youth golfathletes of "Do not let fitness be your weakness", but in this case;
"Do not let putting be your weakness"
Too many youth golf competitors focus to much on their distance and long game, often ingoring a weak part of their game which really would make all the difference to their scores.I mean just imagine if you could guarantee the you holed out EVERYTIME from 6 feet and it.
Of course, even the best in the world can't do that, but you can at least try to hole out as often as possible, so you should;
Practice at home
On the course
Practice crazy sloping putts
Perform short distance pressure drills (holing 30 from 4ft without missing for example)
And you can try these two youth golf performance putting practice routines;
#1 Perfect Putting Triad
Mark out 3 distances from the cup and put a tee at 3, 6 and 9 ft (you can begin with 2, 4, 6 ft). You must hole 3 balls in a row from the 3ft spot before moving to 6ft then continue on to the 9ft spot. So it goes; start at 3ft, 6ft, 9ft then continue back; 3 putts from each 9ft, then 6ft, and finally onto the 3ft distance.
Remember though, you cannot progress to the next distance until you hole all 3 from the previous distance. You can make this REALLY tough and really test those pressure nerves by starting all over if you miss a single putt. That means even if you get to the 2nd time at 6ft so you have holed 3 putts from 3 ft, 3 putts from 6 ft, 6 putts from 9ft and now 2 putts from the 6ft length if you miss the 3rd?
You start completely from the 3 ft all over again. It's tough, but this is how you can help gain focus, control pressure issues and learn to take your time on each shot.
#2 Compass Drill
Mark out with tee pegs a compass
You can vary the length of putts you want to try this with, start at 3-4 ft is my suggestion.
The object is to hole a putt from each direction without missing, if you do, you start at north again.
Progression with this game can be done by;
Attempting 3-4 putts from each direction
Adding NE, SE, SW, NW to the N, E, S, W.
Increasing the distance to 4-6 feet
Perform this putting drill on a slope to make it harder.
Here is a video from my friends at Mental Caddie who will help your thinking to be a better youth golf competitor by not letting putting negativity be a weakness of yours.
Youth golf performance is all about 3 things, golf fitness, golf swing and mental strength.
Make sure you work on all 3 areas of your game to play your best in junior golf tournaments.
